The research say it is all about self-esteem. When we feel our self esteem threatened, we tend to lie more.

But the most interesting thing about this study is this:

"Men lie no more than women, but they tend to lie to make themselves look better, while women are more likely to lie to make the other person feel better."

But the article concludes that that honesty yields more genuine relationships and trust.

I agree. Learn to be funny and easy going.

It is way easier and less stressful that trying to maintain your self esteem because no matter what, it really doesn't matter in the long run...
